- The research activity of the Institute of Zoology is related to the current international and national priorities in the field of biodiversity, ecology and environment preservation. The investigations cover the following main scientific trends:
- Study of the biodiversity in Bulgaria, the Balkan Peninsula and the Palearctic and working out scientific foundations about its preservation, restoration and scientifically con formable use;
- Study of the anthropogenic influence upon animal organisms and their populations, as well as the possibilities of using some species as bioindicators of the environmental condition;
- Study of the biology, ecology and ethology of harmful and useful animal organisms from our fauna and their bioactive substances, as well as the possibilities for the practical application of the results.
- Study of the problems of the development of animals and the mechanisms of their speciation and evolution;
- Study of the plankton, benthos, ichtyofauna, hydrochemistry, biological resources, pollution and self-purification of fresh water and brackish ecosystems in Bulgaria and the Danube River;
- Study the habitats of breeding and migrating birds n the territory of Bulgaria and give suggestions for protection of territories significant for the preservation of rare and endangered bird species have been made. At the proposal of specialists from the Institute, many caves and other natural habitats of rare animals, as well as some animal species have been updated;
- The specialists of the Institute are co-authors of “A Red Book of Bulgaria” v. 2 Animals, 1985 and they participate in its actualisation;
- The Institute of Zoology is the base organization of biomonitoring of the country. Together with other institutes and organizations in the country the scientific basis of biological monitoring has been elaborated. In this way Bulgaria is included in the Global environmental system.
