The Bundeswehr Institute for Underwater Sound and Geophysical Research (FWG) belongs to the BWB organization. It is located in Kiel (Schleswig-Holstein) and was founded in 1964. The main focus is on the following activities: * Collection, processing and provision of original data measured at sea to serve as the basis of BWB R&D projects and as operational guidance for the Navy; * Feasibility studies into new procedural concepts for antisubmarine warfare, minehunting and torpedo sonar; * Development, verification and validation of models for sonar performance forecasts and simulation; * Basic acoustic analyses aimed at increasing target location capabilities and reducing the risk to Bundeswehr ships and boats; * Study of how maritime processes influence underwater target location and how the water flow around and behind ship / submarine hulls affects detectability; * Study of seabed and sea surface properties for the purposes of underwater reconnaissance; * Examination of methods for maritime condition monitoring by remote sensing and for non-acoustic detection of objects above and below water.
