organisation profile
The Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) is an institute of Leiden University whose main area of work is research and education in the field of environmental sciences. In 2007, there are 50 persons employed including 30 scientific staff. The interfaculty character reflects itself in the various staffmembers' backgrounds, such as: ecologists, chemists, anthropologists and sociologists.
Research
The research projects encompass contributions both from natural and social sciences. CML has three research departments:- Environmental Biology (CML EB), dealing with sustainability and biodiversity in rural areas;
- Industrial Ecology (CML IE), dealing with research in the field of Industrial Ecology;
- Environment and Development (CML ED), dealing with co-management of natural resources in natural areas in developing countries.
- Field research (carried out jointly with students) takes place both in industrialised countries and non-industrialised countries. A major proportion of research is contract research. Clients include the Dutch government, the EU, companies, and other organizations. Acquisition and acceptance of contract research are geared towards CML's research themes.
Education
CML’s education programme aims for providing knowledge, insight and skills which are required in multidisciplinary efforts to analyse environmental problems and to contribute to their solution. Bringing together students from different disciplinary backgrounds is therefore a key feature of our educational philosophy.
CML offers a variety of courses, project groups and individual research internships, both at the graduate and postgraduate level. The education programme is oriented to three areas of interest:- An MSc 'Sustainability and Biodiversity' as part of the MSc in Biology: this MSc is organised together within the Institute of Biology Leiden, the National Herbarium and the Natural History Museum in Leiden.
- An MSc 'Industrial Ecology', dealing with tools and practice for sustainable production and consumption; this MSc started in September 2004 and is organised together with Delft Technical University and Erasmus University Rotterdam.
- An MA 'Environment, Culture and Social Change', dealing with environmental problems in developing countries; this curriculum is in preparation within the Faculty of Arts.
