organisation profile
Istituto di Fisica dell'Atmosfera is Rome section of Istituto di Scienze dell'Atmosferea e del Clima since 13 September 2000. IFA,together with the FISBAT section in Bologna, is the main Institute of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) in the atmospheric research field. IFA has been involved in several studies of the atmosphere ranging from the stratosphere to the boundary layer. IFA has also been involved in many oceanographic studies. It has taken part in the main international programs for the study of climate and atmosphere (GARP, WCRP, ALPEX, MEDALPEX, MAST). The institute has experience in developing complex meteorological instrumentation like LIDAR, SODAR and meteorological RADAR, and it has a solar radiation network in the Italian Peninsula.
The Institute has access to the CNR oceanographic vessels. IFA prides a great experience in studies on air-sea interaction phenomena both from theoretical and experimental points of view. In the last 15 years it has been involved in remote sensing of ocean and atmosphere: the Institute has computer facilities and has the capability to process more than 20 satellite images per day. The application of remote sensing techniques for studying the principal features of the circulation and air-sea fluxes is one of the main interests at the present stage. IFA exchanges data on a bilateral basis, without charge. Some data are of restricted availability, awaiting final clearance by the scientists involved in their original collection.
