NIVA is Norway’s leading multidisciplinary research institute in the field of use and protection of water bodies and water quality, in fresh and marine waters.
NIVA is a foundation established on 1 July 1958. Its board is appointed by the Ministry of the Environment (MD), the Research Council of Norway and the employees at NIVA. The head office is in Oslo with regional offices in Hamar, Grimstad, Bergen and Trondheim, and a marine research station near Drøbak. NIVA has a well qualified and experienced team of 240 employees (including subsidiary Akvaplan-niva), with over 120 professionals with doctoral and graduate qualifications.
