The Laboratorio di Geologia Marina e Sedimentologia (Laboratory of Marine Geology and Sedimentology), in the Department for the study of the territory and its resources, carries out research mainly in the Western Mediterranean Basin (Ligurian Sea). Since last year, the Laboratory has studied the continental platform both from a sedimentological-morphological point of view and a geodynamical one, to understand the kinematics of this area by focusing on the Pliocene compressive phenomena. Simultaneously, suspended particulate matter was analyzed to gain information regarding the influences of the boundary morphology on the sedimentary dynamics. The heavy metal and organic compound distributions in the sediments and the waters was also determined, particularly in the areas where a high interaction between pollution sources and distributing agents (canyons, coastline, etc.) was expected. Because of its multidisciplinary nature, this activity was carried out in collaboration with other national and international research bodies.
