organisation profile
The Laboratory of Ecology in the Department of Botany carries out research in the phytoplankton ecology of the Mediterranean Sea and the Antarctic and Atlantic oceans, and participates in many Italian and international research programs. Measurements and sampling are usually carried out by means of periodic oceanographic cruises in oceanic and neritic waters or by annual temporal series in coastal waters. The research deals with:
- spatial distribution and temporal evolution of phytoplankton populations related to principal environmental factors, particularly nutrient availability and underwater irradiance.
- the annual cycle of phytoplankton in coastal waters. Coastal environments influenced by terrestrial discharges are investigated and, in relation to the recent occurrence of mucilage in the Tyrrhenian Sea, the temporal development of biomass and nutrients is being followed at two different sites.
- phytoplankton production and bloom in the Antarctic waters related to the marginal ice zone and environmental factors.
- characterization and quantification of solar radiant energy transformation and its attenuation particularly by phytoplankton biomass.
