The Department of Aquatic BioSciences is the caretaker of one of the oldest aquatic research traditions. It all started in 1876 when Tromsø Museum moved into its new building and initiated research on the rich aquatic resources of the northern/Arctic areas. From ca. 1880 the results were published in an indigenous scientific journal: Tromsø Museums Årshefter.
