The National Centre for Marine Sciences (NCMS), former Marine Research Centre (MRC), belongs to Lebanese National Council for Scientific Research (LNCSR). It was established in 1975 in the coastal cities of Jounieh. In 1995 the center was partially relocated in Marine Station at Batroun, 60 km north of Beirut, where there are training and research facilities with also an aquaculture experimental plant. However, the Jounieh premises were kept as the headquarters for monitoring and data management. The personnel of the Centre is constituted by researchers specialized in different marine fields, assisted by scientific assistants and technicians. Research projects and monitoring activities are carried out in physical oceanography, planktonology, marine ecology, algology, toxic algae, eutrophication survey, hydrology, pollution, fisheries etc. Basic equipment are available, for hydrology survey, current measurements, plankton studies, microscopic instruments, spectrophotometer, atomic absorption, gas-chromatograph etc. We have not been able to replace our research vessel SETA III that was lost during the war. Currently we rely on fishery boats for field work and data collection. Many research projects as regards the coastal marine environment were carried out in Lebanon. Several papers were published in international and national journals related to physical oceanography, pollution, marine ecology, plankton, biodiversity, benthos, fish etc. The NCMS has participated and completed its commitment to MEDAR/MEDATLAS, and continues its active support to various MEDPOL monitoring activities, and is involved in other joint activities such as the CEDRE program, which is a joint activity with the French Government, and a research cooperation program with Syria.
