The coastal research station is an external department of the 'Niedersaechsisches Landesamt fuer Oekologie' (provincial authority for water and waste of Lower saxonia). Its function is divided into three different categories:
1) Geomorphology of the coastal area (the topography of the Wadden areas and the shores of the island and the mainland; the morphological changes in the coastal zones; analysis of sediments and suspended matter)
2) Hydrography of the coastal waters (registration and analysis of hydrodynamics (watergauge, current, seaway) in the Wadden Sea and along the shores of islands and mainland; estimation of hydrodynamic interaction with morphology and ecology)
3) Ecology of the Wadden Sea and quality of estuarine and coastal waters (examination of benthos communities for the characterisation of different types of population and for registration of long-term trends; counting and determination of phytoplankton organisms and water analysis for actual judgement of the phytoplankton situation and for long-term trends)
