organisation profile

The NAMD operates in a section of the German Meteorological Service (DWD) being responsible for all basic affairs concerned with marine meteorology as data acquisition, quality control, archival and marine climatology. In this context it covers several functions within the MCSS (Marine Climatological Summaries Scheme) of WMO (World Meteorological Organization). One of these is the GCC (Global Collecting Centre), focusing all marine meteorological observations taken by the international VOS fleet (Voluntary Observing Ship) worldwide, supervising the minimum quality standards of these data and distributing them to 8 international 'Responsible Members' of the scheme, who use the data for purposes of climate monitoring and research for at least the areas of their responsibility. Within this task sharing scheme the centre also acts as Responsible Member with special focus upon the South Atlantic Ocean. All worldwide data are archived and upgraded by a special advanced quality control in the NAMD. Besides the worldwide data from VOS there is a subset from measuring sites in German coastal waters (e.g. light vessels). Data exchange is along the lines of internationally agreed rules, taking into account the status of the data. Exchange of marine meteorological data is normally free of charge between WMO members and for non profit scientific research. For other use data is principally not free of charge. The costs are assessed along the lines of the actual valid economic constraints and rules.
