- Institute of Geophysics is one of the oldest scientific institutes of Georgian Academy of Sciences founded in 1933. The Dusheti Magnetic Observatory which is affilited to the Institute was founded 150 years ago and Tbilisi Seismological Observatory - 100 years ago. At present the Institute is one of leading scientific centres of the Academy and carries out fundamental and applaed research in followin main direction:
Monitoring of geophysical fields (seismic, electromagnetic, gravitational, etc.) on the territory of Georgia; study Earth's deep structure and its evolution; - Engineering, prospecting and environmental geophysics; perfection of prospecting methods;
- Physics of Atmosphere, Sea Dynamics, Monitoring of main hydrometeorological fields and modeling of ecological systems;
- Solar-Terrestrial Physics and physics of Cosmic Rayas.
At present Department of Mathematical Modeling of Geophysical and Ecological Processes in the Sea and Atmosphere is unique in the Caucasian region, in which the natural and ecological processes which take place in the system the sea - land - atmosphere are studied with use of methods of mathematical modeling and experimental data. The basic principles of a regional coupled hydrodynamic model sea-leand-atmosphere are being developed in the department. Along side with it, in the Deparment a series of mathematical models have been developed:
- Mathematical models of dynamics of the Black and Caspian Sea;
- Mathematical models of large-scale, middlescale and mezo-scale atmospheric processes;
- Mathematical model of impurities (including radioactive) spreading in atmosphere from ground and high-altitude sources
