ICRAM, the Central Institute for Research Applied to the Sea, was a non-profit public entity, providing support to policies implemented by competent public administrations, made recommendations, provided consultancy and supported local authorities in coordinating their activities in marine protected areas, dredging and fishing at local level. ICRAM was acting under the control of the Ministry of Environment and Territory to develop and validate methodologies and techniques for the assessment of the state of the marine environment. The activity of ICRAM was indicated by the Italian Ministry of Environment and Terrotory on a three year duration plan. It was based on three lines; research projects, applications to the territory, institutional support.  ICRAM is since 2008 integrated in the new ISPRA organisation.
