The Russian Shipbuilding Agency (Rossudostroyenie) was established under Presidential Decree Ne651 of May 25,1999 as a federal executive body in cbarge of implementation of the state shipbuilding policy. The shipbuilding industry is among the primary components of the infrastructure which secures strategic deterrence and protection of the country's maritime borders, resources and communications, cargo and passenger transportation by sea and in-land waterways, and provides for exploitation of biological and mineral resources of the World Ocean. Russia is a major sea power where ships, vessels and watercraft of virtually every class and purpose are built. Rossudostroyenie unites 170 enterprises of various forms of ownership and business profiles - shipbuilding, ship repair, mechanical engineering, electrical maintenance, and instrument-making.

These enterprises employ over 220,000 people, with about half of them engaged in shipbuilding and ship repair. Rossudostroyenie's industrial facilities permit to build vessels with a displacement of up to 100,000 t. Ships and vessels built at Russian shipyards fly the flags of as many as 40 countries. Today, the Rossudostroyenie shipbuilders seek to further develop their priority lines of business, offering to both domestic and foreign customers surface combat ships and boats, cargo and fishery ships, oil and gas producing platforms, auxiliary ships, and other vessels. In addition to ships of various classes, Rossudostroyenie offers a wide range of other products -from rolled metals and underwater weapons to consumer goods. Also, the Rossudostroyeniye enterprises make most component parts for their primary products: sonar equipment, diesel engines, turbines, propeller screws, etc. The industry's research arm comprises some 70 research and design institutions employing six Full Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 210 Doctors and more than 1,300 Candidates of Science. Having maintained their vast technological and production potential, the Rossudostroyenie enterprises are now capable of making equipment of any sophistication level. The industry welcomes partners for mutually advantageous cooperation.
