organisation profile
BIOS's mission is to provide the scientific basis and environmental information for decisions in areas where political, administrative and commercial activities are important to the environment. BIOS performs strategic and applied research and is responsible for collection and the overall management and co-ordination of data on nature and the environment. As a research institute BIOS is separated from the political-/administrative system when carrying out research and monitoring.
In Denmark NERI has a central position as the National Focal Point for Marine and Freshwater Data, collecting national data from monitoring programmes and disseminating results to administrators and the public. The department of Marine ecology has about 70 employees and has a multidisciplinary approach with experts within biological, chemical and physical oceanography. The department participates in several national, international and EU funded projects. The department is in charge of implementing protocols for data collection and quality control for the Danish marine monitoring programme as well as holding the national database of the monitoring program with data from 1975 onwards. The data include salinity, temperature, oxygen, nutrients, chlorophyll-a, primary production, phytoplankton, zooplankton, zoobenthos, and heavy metals from the open Danish marine areas.
Finally, NERI is responsible for evaluating long-term changes in Danish waters, especially the changes in concentrations and fluxes of nutrients.
