Institute of zoology supervises all researches on the Animal world of Kazakhstan: study, protection, and usage. More than 26 years (1965 - 1991) institute supervises scientific researches on natural locus of illnesses that are carried out in Central Asia Republics of the Former USSR. The institute has brought the large contribution to a zoological science by creation of the fundamental reports and continuants on separate groups of vertebrate and invertebrate animals living in Kazakhstan.

Institute of zoology is a large center of training of scientific specialists: zoologists, paleobiologists, entomologists, hydrobiologists, parasitologists, and helmintologists. It trains personnel for the structural subdividing and for others scientific, educational, and industrial organizations of republic. Since 1943 more than 40 doctors and 200 candidates of sciences defense their thesis in the Institution.

For 50 years of the existence by institute about 180 books, including more than 90 monographies, reviews and continuants are published. Some of them are translated and issued abroad. In 2001 there are 127 persons in the Institution of Zoology, 88 scientific staff are among them. There are 44 candidates of sciences, 15 doctors of sciences, 2 term-correspondents, and 1 academician of NAS of Kazakhstan.

Laboratory of TERIOLOGY. The head of the lab is Amankul B. Bekenov, Doctor of Sciences, professor.
Laboratory was organized in 1944. Many works were done concerning valuable mammals species: Saiga, Boar, Volf, Muskrat, Red Deer, etc. Another field of interests is biodiversity and distribution of Rodents.

Laboratory of ORNOTOLOGY. The head of the lab is Anatoly F. Kovshar, Doctor of Sciences, professor. Laboratory was organized in 1946. The main scientific activity concerns numbering of waterfalls birds, migration of birds, ecology and etology of rare species in all regions of Kazakhstan.

Laboratory of ENTOMOLOGY. The head of the lab is Vladimir L. Kazenas, Doctor of Sciences. Laboratory was organized in 1946. Morphology and taxonomy of various groups of insects and spider are under investigation.

Laboratory of PALEOZOOLOGY. The head of the lab is Piruza A. Tleuberdina. Laboratory was organized in 1946. Paleogene and neogene fauna of Southern and Western Kazakhstan are the main subjects of investigation.

Laboratory of HYDROBIOLOGY and TOXICOLOGY. The head of the lab is Soviet A. Matmuratov, candidat of Sciences. Laboratory was organized in 1964. Problems of anthropogenic pollution and it influence to water and terrestrial fauna now is the main for the lab.

Laboratory of MALAKOLOGY and CENOTIC PARASITOLOGY. The head of the lab is Blok Sh. Shaykenov, Doctor of Sciences, professor.

Laboratory of GENERAL PARASITOLOGY. The head of the lab is Dzheldygyz Zhatkanbayeva, Doctor of Sciences. Both labs in the modern composition were organized in 1993, but laboratories and scientific groups exist from 1944. Different helmintosis, other parasites and terrestrial mollusks are the main items of investigation.

Laboratory of GENETIC FUND of ANIMALS. The head of the lab is A. Murzamadiev, Doctor of Sciences, professor, term-correspondent of NAS RK. The laboratory was transferred to Institution in 1993. Different methods of preservation of genetic pool of rare ungulates are under investigation.

Laboratory of BIOCONTROL. The head of the lab is Muhktar H. Baizhanov, Candidate of Sciences. The laboratory was organized in 1968. Different agents (species of fungi and bacteria) against bloodsuckers and other harmful invertebrates are founding in this lab.

CENTER OF BIRDS RINGING. Center was organized in 1993, the head is Andrey E. Gavrilov, Candidate of Sciences. Investigation of bird’s migration is the main activity of the Center.
