The Centre of the Caspian Sea Problems was established in 1949 with the aim to study the hydrological, morphological, geological, and geo-morphological as well as socio-economic aspects in the Caspian Sea basin. The Centre has conducted the study on economic issues of sea transport and explored options for port facilities construction. Number of studies conducted was devoted to the state of the Caspian Sea environment in general and in the coastal area of Absheron peninsula and Baku bay in particular.
At present, Centre carries out researches in three main fields:

Exploring reasons and predicting future seesaws of the Caspian Sea level and its impact on the socio-economic and ecological situation in the coastal zone.
Studying state of the Caspian Sea environment affected by offshore and onshore human activity (particularly intensive oil and gas production activities)
Conducting geo-morphological, landscape-geographical and recreational researches on the Caspian Sea level fluctuations.
Within the frame of its activity, Centre closely cooperates with the structural sub-divisions of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.
