The Institute of Limnology is a research institution. The Institute of Limnology as a legal entity acts under the direct scientific leadership of the Branch of Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics, and Geography, Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). The Institute of Limnology is a member of the regional St.-Petersburg Scientific Center, RAS
Objects of investigations are the largest in Europe freshwater reservoirs - Lake Ladoga, Lake Onega, and the Gulf of Finland; as well as other lakes and their watersheds on the territory of Russia. The main attention is paid to Lake Ladoga that is the main source of freshwater for St.-Petersburg.
The Institute of Limnology, RAS, was founded in 1944 and is now a part of the Branch of Oceanology, Atmospheric Physics, and Geography of the RAS. At the moment the Institute staff consists of 155 employees, including 113 scientists.
The Institute has sufficient resources for experimental and field studies. The listing includes but is not limited to the methodical research center on Lake Krasnoye (Karelian Isthmus), expeditionary bases on Lake Ladoga (settlement Impilahti, Karelia) and Lake Onega (settlement Suisar, Karelia), the research vessel "Talan" (displacement - 267 tons). The vessel is used for specific studies conducted on Lake Ladoga. The Institute is involved in the postgraduate training of qualified specialists in different areas of geography, physics, chemistry, and biology related to the lakes.
The main area of the Institute's scientific work is fundamental research in the field of limnology. It supports the development of fundamental scientific bases of environmental protection, restoration and rational use of natural resources of lakes. The institute performs the theoretical, experimental and methodical studies of separate processes as well as the comprehensive regional research studies based on the investigation of spatial and temporary laws of the functioning of lake's ecosystems and their evolution under natural conditions and under antropogenic influence.
