organisation profile

The Marine Biology Team is a small (four elements) unit of the Biology Department of the University of the Azores. Created in 1987, its research is directed to the systematics, biology and ecology of the Azorean marine littoral organisms. The main taxonomic groups under study are the algae, the molluscs, the crustaceans and the fish. As a backup to the current research, bibliographic references to these taxonomic groups in the Azores are being compiled and checklists will be published in the near future. Taxonomic reference collections of the groups referred to above have been created and are being constantly updated, in order to assist species identification. As far as teaching is concerned, a medium term goal is to focus on marine science, creating a Marine Biology branch on the Department's Biology degree.
