The National Institute of Fisheries Research (INIP/IPIMAR) is an organisation of applied research and experimental development of the Ministry of the Sea, working in five areas: Fishery Resources, Oceanology, Aquaculture, Technology of Aquatic Products and Fishery Technology. The Department of Oceanology carries out projects in the areas of fishery oceanology (chemical, physical and biological), pollution, salubrity control and environmental studies in estuaries, coastal lagoons and coastal waters. The Department of Fishery Resources carries out studies on biology, ecology and fishing of the most important species, and is also responsible for the stock assessment. The aim of the Department of Aquaculture is the research on reproduction, nutrition, zootechny and salubrity of marine species with economic value. The Department of Technology of Aquatic Products is responsible for the study of the main aspects of preservation, transformation and upgrading of marine products. The Department of Fishing Technology studies mainly the different aspects of design, rentability and selectivity of fishing gear.
