organisation profile

The Marine Research Centre, at the University of Goteborg, is considered as a national resource for marine research. It has been operating since June 1989, after the decision on their establishment was taken by the Swedish parliament earlier that year, and according to special governmental decree its tasks are formulated as:

  • to carry our research in the entire field of marine natural sciences
  • to inform on the status of the sea within their respective geographic area of responsibility
  • to support education in the marine natural sciences at several levels
  • to assist the national and regional authorities in the surveillance of marine environment.

The geographical area of responsibility designated to the Marine Research Centre of Goteborg extends from the Norwegian border in the northern part of the Skagerrak to the southern part of the Sound. Hydrographically this implies mainly a shallow sea area in temperate latitudes which is highly productive. Marine research at Goteborg University is more extensive than at other Swedish universities and marine research is also a major part of the programme of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Three similar books on marine research projects at Goteborg University were published between 1986-1991. Since its first year of existence, the Marine Research Centre has started to build up the structure for this work, including a collaboration group with the regional and national authorities.

The three Marine Research Centres have in close co-operation presented a revision of the marine part of the former monitoring programme area of the national monitoring programme, which started in 1993. Scientists both at the University and at the field station at Kristineberg and Tjarno have been active in carrying out these monitoring programmes. The Marine Research Centres have also established a close co-operation with the Information Centres, established by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency at the County Administration. The Information Centres have the formal responsibility to give the public as correct information as possible if sudden, harmful events in the sea appear.

The organisation has ceased to exist from 30th of June 2008. The area of operation has been taken over by the Sven Lovén centre for Marine Sciences.
