Its staff is more or less 180 persons (researchers, associate professors, professors, engineers, technicians and Ph.D. students. IMEV is one of the three marine campus belonging to Sorbonne Université.

IMEV fulfils five main missions:
- Research: Research activities are conducted in laboratories set up as joint CNRS/SU research units. The themes are oceanography, with its biological, physical and chemical components (Laboratoire d'Océanographie de Villefranche - LOV - UMR 7093) and cellular and development biology (Laboratoire de Biologie du Développement - UMR 7009).
- Education and Training: On-site courses are full part of undergraduate and graduate degrees offered at Sorbonne University. They cover a large range of thematic, from geosciences to developmental biology to oceanography. Thematic summer schools as well as training internships are organized, with the partner institutions.
- Observation: IMEV is greatly involved in several programs acquiring observation data (physics, chemistry, biology) over multi-years, in the coastal and the offshore ecosystems. It thus contributes to the advancement of knowledge in the large themes of global changes and changes in biodiversity, and to the technological development of ways of study the oceans. It is active in programs for the exploitation and protection of the ocean environment from a multidisciplinary perspective.
- Scientific mediation: IMEV develops educational activities as well as specific activities for wide audience, more specifically for the youngest.
- Hostelling: IMEV ensures the general operation of the site, with a hostelling capacity (50 beds), a large library, a large access to the sea (boats, diving, sampling facilities) and analytical platforms.
