The Biosphere Reserve Office is an institution of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In addition to the management of the protected area, it performs the function of the Lower Nature Conservation Authority, is thus responsible for the implementation of the Nature Conservation Act of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern . The recognition as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (1991) was accompanied by an expansion of the tasks. Public relations, environmental education, research and the promotion of sustainable regional development are among the main tasks of the Biosphere Reserve Office South-East Rügen in addition to the perception of sovereign interests.
