The studies in Gästrikland are aimed at examining water quality based on priority environmental goals. These are the nutritional content of the water "no eutrophication", oxygen status and the content of organic substances "living lakes and streams", acidity / acidification "just natural acidification" and metals "non poisonous/toxic environment".

The report is based on the trend analyzes that are documented in "Gästriklands vatten, ændringer 1969 - 1999", Svelab Miljö-laboratorier AB, 1999-11- 23 and surveys 1969 - 2005. Gästriklands VVS is an association between municipalities and industries as well as others for water conservation interested in the area's activities. Gästrikland Water Conservation Association shall be responsible for coordinating the recipient control imposed on members of the association by the county administrative board. Otherwise, the association shall follow the water's condition by sampling in the water area, record sewage spill, provide the members with information and advice on matters relating to the association's activities, act for members' information and mainly by counseling to work for a coordinated solution of the necessary measures to counter pollution of the water system.
