organisation profile

Created in 1951, the BGI is one of the Offices of the "Federation of Astronomical and Geophysical Services" and the executif Office of the International Gravimetry Commission of Section III of the IAG, the International association of Geodesy. Attributions of the BGI consist in collecting all the existing data of gravity and information available on the field of terrestrial gravity, in compiling and archiving them in a data base in order to redistribute them to a broad community of users. There are various types of data: measurements with gravimeter (localization of the site by three coordinates, value of gravity...), medium or specific values of the anomaly of gravity outside, gravimetric charts, description of reference station, publications about terrestrial gravity. The BGI have also, by the intermediary of one of its support organizations: grids of geoid values deduced from satellite altimetry, currently from missions Geosat, Topex-Poseidon, ERS1 and ERS2; series of coefficients (harmonic spherical) of global models of geopotential; medium values of topography. These data are sometimes used in an internal way for the validation of measurements and geophysic analyses. The BGI developed various algorithms and softwares of validation and data analysis, and also its own computerized management system, based on the server of relational data bases ORACLE9i. Various services are proposed to the users. All kinds of gravimetric data can be transferred to the BGI, with or without restriction of redistribution specified by the supplier. The BGI depends on the following organizations: CNRS/CNES/IGN.
