University of Kyrenia (KU) was founded in 2013, comprising of the faculties of Maritime Studies; Maritime Management and Administration, and Marine Sciences. It also took responsibility for the Marine Transportation and Management postgraduate programme and all the Maritime Vocational School programmes (with all their infrastructure and superstructure) from the Near East University. After obtaining accreditation in 2013 from the Higher Education Planning, Evaluation Accreditation and Coordination Council (YODAK) of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus the University applied for approval from Turkey’s Council of Higher Education (YOK). The University was granted this on 16th January 2014, and it was officially established on 28th January, immediately opening its doors to students in 10 different programmes at the Maritime faculties.
In 2015 - 2017 the University has expanded with faculties of Aviation and Space Sciences; Education; Law; Economics and Administrative Sciences; Architecture; Engineering; and Health Sciences and Medicine. During short period after foundation the University of Kyrenia has become one of the most prominent educational institutions in the region offering 39 under-graduate programmes; 2 postgraduate programmes; and 9 associate degree programmes offered by two vocational schools.
The majority of the University’s Maritime programmes are implemented in full compliance with the regulations and standards laid down by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communication of the Republic of Turkey. The University also fosters marine research through the activities of its research vessel, the M/Y J. TEAL, which is equipped with the most up-to-date technologies.
