organisation profile

The Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, is located on the University's main campus (St. John's) and ~10 km from the Fisheries and Marine Institute (EDMO record id 2759). It uses facilities at the Ocean Sciences Center (EDMO record id 2649), located ~15 km away, and at the Bonne Bay Field Station in Norris Point (NL).

The Department offers undergraduate and graduate programs, in addition to being part of the Cognitive and Behavioural Ecology (CABE) program along with other university departments, the Fisheries & Marine Institute and federal government departments.

History
In 1949, the Memorial University College (est. 1925, located on Parade Street in St. John's), was elevated to university status as Memorial University of Newfoundland. It moved to Elizabeth Avenue (current main campus location) in 1961. Marine biology activities began in 1961 within the Biology Department (founded earlier) and led to the construction of the Marine Sciences Research Laboratory at Logy Bay in 1967, in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada. The laboratory evolved into the Ocean Sciences Center (OSC) and remained administered by the Biology Department until 2012, after which OSC became its own Department.

The Department of Biology used to have professors working at its affiliated Sir Wilfred Grenfell College (now the University's Grenfell Campus, since 2010) in Corner Brook (NL). Biology classes are still taught at the Grenfell Campus, but as part of the Environmental Science program.
