organisation profile

Due to the steadily growing importance of tasks with spatial reference at the national and European level - also in connection with the global change - the use of geoinformation has increased enormously within the last few years, supported by the rapid development of the modern information and communication technologies. To meet the demand for high-quality products, the BKG applies most up-to-date geodetic and cartographic technologies as well as high-efficiency information and communication technologies together with European and international partners. In addition, the BKG contributes in technological and organizational regard substantially to the establishment of the GeoDataInfrastructure for Germany (GDI-DE) by which a continuous and full-coverage supply with current, reliable and easy-to-handle geoinformation is ensured not only for our country but also for the EU.

The core tasks comprise

  • supply of the Federal institutions with analog and digital topographic cartographic information,
  • counseling of the Federal Government in the field of geoinformation and
  • safeguarding of German interests at the international level.

In close cooperation with the Land survey authorities topographic information is provided in the form of

  • digital basic geodata of different levels of resolution and
  • topographic map series of different scales

as well as the methods and procedures required for this purpose are further developed while taking into account the relevant most recent scientific findings and technologies in these fields.

The provision and realization of uniform gravity reference networks for the Federal Republic of Germany constitutes the core task of the Department of Geodesy. These fundamental data form the basis for the referencing of geoinformation as well as for navigational purposes and investigations on earth observation, as e.g. with regard to environmental changes. The national reference systems are part of European and global reference systems.
