organisation profile

The National Laboratory Service (NLS) is a leading provider of high quality environmental testing and analysis and has been at the centre of the UK’s environmental regulator the Environment Agency for over 20 years.

The laboratories provide analytical solutions to problems of air, water and soil pollution, applying the very latest chemical and molecular techniques.

The NLS was originally part of the National Rivers Authority and became a single entity in 1993. Today the NLS operates as a business unit of the Environment Agency and is based at three laboratories located in Exeter, Nottingham and Leeds. Each unit specialises in specific areas of environmental testing & analysis.

The Environment Agency (EA) is an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) which works to create better places for people and wildlife, and support sustainable development.

The Environment agency is responsible for the following in England: Regulating major industry and waste, treatment of contaminated land; water quality and resources; fisheries; inland river, estuary and harbour navigations; conservation and ecology;  managing the risk of flooding from main rivers, reservoirs, estuaries and the sea.

EA’s head office is in Bristol with additional offices across England. Each area office is responsible for the day-to-day management of their local area.

As of 1 April 2013 Natural Resources Wales (NRW) took over the responsibilities of the Environment Agency in Wales.
