organisation profile

The major concern of the Phyiscal Oceanographic Group was to obtain physical oceanographic knowledge about the northeast Pacific Ocean out to several hundred miles from the B.C. coast. It also provided oceanographic support (with both personnel and equipment) to other investigations at the Pacific Biological Station; in addition, it routinely obtained chemical and biological data for use by these investigations.

The Group also contributed by supplying oceanographic support (and aid in the development of techniques) to marine investigations "outside" of the Fishereis Research Board, such as those taking place in the Arctic Ocean, which are essential to various aspects of the security and profit of Canada.

History
The Pacific Oceanographic Group was created within the Pacific Biological Station (Fisheries Research Board) during World War II. It worked closely with the Royal Canadian Navy and the National Research Council. After the war, it concerned itself mostly with physical oceanography and chemistry. It received an influx of secondees from the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys in 1962 (which became the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources in 1966).

In 1970 some of the group moved to the newly established Pacific Environment Institute (also under the Fisheries Research Board) to carry on its work. The said institute was transferred to the Department of Environment in 1971 and later became the West Vancouver Laboratory. The rest of the group moved to a new Ocean Physics Division under the new Department of Environment, located in Victoria, BC (1230 Government Street). As the completion of the Institute of Ocean Sciences (1977) grew closer, the Ocean Physics Division moved near to its site, near Patricia Bay (Sidney, BC).

Most previous POG responsibilities are today assumed by the Institute of Ocean Sciences (Sidney, BC).
