The University has a collaborative Marine Science program between the Biology and Earth & Atmospheric Sciences departments.
The University is linked to the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (Bamfield, B.C.), a not-for-profit facility dedicated to education and research related to coastal marine biology, where some courses are taught.
Since 2006, the University hosts the Centre for Earth Observation Sciences (CEOS), which uses remote sensing, intelligent image analysis, and spatio-temporal data management to undertake research in environmental change and resource management.
The university also hosts the Canadian Circumpolar Institute, founded in 1960.
History
The university was founded in 1908. A Department of Geology was founded in 1912 and a Department of Geography in 1957. In 1995 both departments merged and formed the Department of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences.
