organisation profile

The ISMER is at the forefront of oceanography research at UQAR, occupying an entire building on the UQAR Rimouski campus. The institute has close to 100 students in graduate oceanography programs. Researchers and students have access to high tech equipment, a 50 m long research vessel (Coriolis II), and an aquaculture laboratory kept supplied with seawater. ISMER's multidisciplinary research teams of biologists, chemists, geologists and physicists, and other associated specialists are actively involved in a number of national and international marine science programs.

ISMER is devoted to the discovery and advancement of basic and applied knowledge of coastal environments. Operating from a sustainable development perspective, the institution is a leader in fields such as climate change at different latitudes, the effects of ultraviolet rays on the lowest links in the food chain, and the impact of contaminants on coastal ecosystems. Marine acoustics, aquaculture, population dynamics and sediment transportation are other areas where it has developed extensive expertise.

ISMER is a member of Québec-Océan, a Québec inter-institutional research group in oceanography, since 2001.

Maritime themes and issues are also commonly part of the UQAR's geography, biology and chemistry programs, and sometimes, of its history, regional development and engineering programs.

UQAR is also a member of the Centre d'études nordiques (1961-), a multidisciplinary research centre on northern studies featuring members from three Québec academic institutions.

History
UQAR has been engaged in oceanographic research activities since 1972, with the creation of the INRS-Océanologie, which was hosted on campus. An oceanographic research section created within the university in 1973 became the Oceanography Department in 1978. In 1990, the INRS-Océanologie together with the Oceanography Department officially formed the Centre Océanographique de Rimouski (-1999). In 2000, the INRS-Océanologie was dissolved, with some of its members joining the new Institut des Sciences de la Mer (ISMER) formed at UQAR, and others moving to INRS-Eau and INRS-Géoressources (now INRS-ETE).
