The CIEMAT has the mission of promoting and carrying out research and technological development projects in the field of energy. These activities must be in the international vanguard of science and technology and keep a close connection with other research groups with similar objectives. As a technological research centre must be the link between basic research, mainly performed in the academic world, and the national industry.
Thus, the results should be transferred to the industry in order to generate the necessary knowledge to adquire and incorporate technology in the most economic way and with the minimum environmental impact. The CIEMAT must have the capacity to act as an adviser to the national authorities in the fields of technology and energy strategy. The Department of Radiological Protection by Intervention which supports the data-base has the following objectives: The objectives of the Project are oriented towards the evaluation and reduction of the radiological risk in real situations of radioactive contamination. The evaluation of radiological impact implies research in radioecology to determine the behaviour of the radionucleides in the environment, their space and time evolution, the exposure pathways to the population and the resulting individual and collective doses. In additon to the impact evaluation, the reduction of risk involves the development of methodologies and criteria for the analysis of optimized intervention strategies, as an instrument to aid in the decision regarding the recovery of contaminated areas.
