The Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research of the Italian National Research Council (CNR-IIA) was founded in 1968 and includes the main division located in the CNR Research Area Roma-1 and two divisions, the Division of Rende located on the campus of the University of Calabria and the Division LARA located in the Research Area of Roma-2 in Tor Vergata. The Institute is part of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the CNR (www.dta.cnr.it) .
The primary research activity of the institute is in the field of environmental pollution in urban and industrial areas as well as in rural and remote areas including the polar regions. Recently, CNR-IIA set up the Earth and Space Science Informatics laboratory (ESSI-lab); the laboratory deals with multi-disciplinary interoperability, cyber-infrastructures, and geospatial information standardization. The CNR-IIA is very active in major international, European and national research networks of excellence and is primarily funded by the European Commission, Italian governmental bodies (i.e., Italian Ministries of Research, Environment, Defense, Foreign Affairs), regional governments in Italy, the CNR and private institutions. The CNR-IIA has a long standing cooperation with the private sector in the field of air pollution monitoring, modeling and prevention as well as industrial emissions.
