- Funded by the Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC), the Geophysical Data Facility (GDF), based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), was designed to meet the data requirements of the Atmospheric Sciences and Solar Terrestrial Physics communities. In 1993, when SERC was replaced by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), GSF became part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and was renamed the British Atmospheric Data Centre (BADC) in 1994.
