- The Chemical Oceanographic Department of the Oceanographic Institute at NCMR is involved in several marine research activities, with particular emphasis to the assessment of the marine environment quality, through the determination of certain chemical parameters. This allows the governmental authorities to make the necessary decisions for the protection of the marine environment from pollution. Other activities of COS/NCMR include scientific support to other disciplines (e.g., determination of water masses, current fields, etc.), advisory role on the upper limits of pollutants in industrial effluent, on sewage water treatment, on legislation on dangerous chemicals, as well as, investigation of abnormalities at sea, such as maritime accidents, fish deaths, red tides, etc.
