The Biological Oceanographic Department of the Institute of Oceanography at the National Centre for Marine Research is involved in several marine research activities with particular interests in the following subjects:
(a) Quantitative and qualitative study of marine flora and fauna communities (phytoplankton, zooplankton, phytobenthos, zoobenthos, meiobenthos).
(b) Marine ecology surveys on coastal and open sea areas, biological pollution indices, toxic phytoplanktonic blooms.
(c) Study of energy fluxes in marine ecosystems and population dynamics.
(d) Impact of toxic substances on marine environment, toxicity of hydrocarbons, dispersants and other pollutants on marine biocenoses, bioaccumulation and biotransfer studies of heavy metals.
(e) development of maps of pollution of metal distribution in Greek seas.
(f) Study of physiological and biochemical pollution effects on marine organisms and populations.
The Biological Oceanographic Department is in close collaboration with other national and international research centres and university departments.
