- Oceanological Centre under NAS of Ukraine was established on the base of Marine Hydrophysical Institute (MHI) and O.O. Kovalevsky Institute of Biology of Southern Seas (IBSS) in 1998 in order to provide favorable conditions for developing fundamental and applied oceanological science in Ukraine, working out a common conception and technology of rational marine nature management, increasing the efficiency of using the scientific and technical potential of marine institutions and technical means to control the state of the marine environment.Directions of activity of Oceanological Centre: fundamental and applied oceanological research of seas and oceans for creating the scientific basis for monitoring, diagnosis and forecast of the state and changes in quality and biodiversity of the marine environment; integrated research of the Azov- Black Sea Basin for creating the technological basis for efficient using its resources, prevention and avoidance of negative anthropogenic effect on the marine environment and its restoration; development and creation of fundamentally new methods and technical means to control the marine environment state and to research oceanological processes, as well as of technologies for collection, processing and systems analysis of oceanological information.
