The Marine Environment Protection Fund (MEPF) is a delivery partner of the Marine Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund, administered by Cefas on behalf of Defra reporting to Defra via the Marine ALSF Steering Group. The MEPF was established in 2004 to commission Marine Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund (Marine ALSF) projects.
In 2002 the Government imposed a levy on all primary aggregates production (including marine aggregates) to reflect the environmental costs of winning these materials. A proportion of the revenue generated was used to provide a source of funding for research aimed at minimising the effects of aggregate production. This fund, delivered through Defra, is known as the AggregateLevy Sustainability Fund (ALSF). The MEPF is a delivery partner under the Marine theme of the ALSF.
