organisation profile
- The Institute for Coastal Marine Environment of the National Research Council (CNR - IAMC), composed of six departments and a marine biology laboratory, traditionally deals with issues related to marine sciences, and in particular in the domains of biology, chemistry, physics, geology, studies on renewable resources (fishing and aquaculture) and on marine technologies.
The most representative research areas are:
- aquaculture, with studies on diversification of fish farming species and development of sustainable production systems for cultivating marine organisms;
- chemistry, with the development of models of ecological systems subject to anthropic impact and of analytical-chemical methodologies for environment monitoring;
- marine ecology, with studies on transitional environments, bio acoustics and behavior ecology, based on an eco-systemic approach with spatial resource management;
- microbiology, with studies on microbial ecology, biology and molecular microbiology, biotechnologies and on the role of microorganisms in the decomposition of organic compounds;
- oceanography, with studies of experimental oceanography, numerical models, operational systems for sea condition forecast on a regional scale and along the coast;
- eco-sustainable fishing, with studies on resource estimation, sustainable management of fish catching processes and on the impact of fishing on marine ecosystems;
- earth and coastal environment sciences, with the studies on solid earth and geodynamics, sedimentary environments, paleo-climate, marine and coastal cartography;
- marine technologies, with the development of hardware and software technologies dedicated to all sectors including technological innovation to maximize fishing effort and traceability of products to the market.
