organisation profile
The Faroe Islands Food- and Veterinary Agency (FFVA) is established under the Ministry of Trade and Industry. FFVA manages the food and veterinary disease laws for the Ministry of Trade and Industry see www.vmr.fo). In addition there are public notices, which are in accordance with these two laws. An updated list of laws and public notices can be seen on the Agency's homesite (www.hfs.fo). FFVA's activities are divided into three main areas, in accordance with the regulation of the Agency:
1) Supervision / administration, 2) Laboratory and 3) Research and development
These three main areas are connected because they build on a lot of the same professional competence. In order to undertake qualified administrative work it is necessary to have a laboratory that can carry out the necessary checks. The research and development area is to increase the knowledge in the administration area, laboratory area and for those companies that are participating in this activity. Therefore these three main areas support each other and this benefits the Agency and the community. Part of the statutory work is updated in connection with the EU trade agreement (see EU regulation 2001/127/EC) and FFVA administers all the proclamations in this region. The accreditation of the laboratory is likewise according to the latest EU requirements (DANAK accreditation no.: 303, see www.danak.dk). According to the EU stipulations FFVA's laboratory is appointed by the Minister of Trade and Industry to be the Faroese "reference-laboratorium".
The administration area comprises an administrative department, food department, a fish- and animal disease department, qulity assurance department and the chief veterinary officer (CVO). The laboratory area comprises a chemical department, a microbial department and a fish pathology department. In the research and development area - projects are carried out within the branch of trade that FFVA is responsible for in pursuance to the law and in areas where there are obvious advantages that projects are carried out at the Agency in accordance to the articles of the Agency.
