The centre was in operation in the period from 1992 until 1997 and involved 97 researchers from 22 different institutions and institutes. The centre conducted research into biological and physico-chemical processes in shallow-water marine areas. Important research themes were the significance of higher species of aquatic plants, benthic micro-algae and macro-algae, phytoplankton in the water phase and benthic fauna. Research was also carried out into the effects of the out-flow of freshwater and of the exploitation of resources in coastal areas.
