organisation profile
- The main goal of The Laboratory of Microbiology, Ghent University and the closely associated bacterial culture collection BCCM/LMG Bacteria Collection is to study, describe and preserve extra situ microbial biodiversity. Our Laboratory is among the world leading research groups in the taxonomy and molecular ecology of various freshwater and marine bacteria, including Aeromonas, Cytophaga, Flavobacterium, Sphingomonas, and Vibrio. Current research focuses on (i) the evolution, phylogeny, molecular and phenotypic diversity of bacteria from different marine settings, including aquaculture, Antarctica, coral reefs, estuaries and coastal areas; (ii) horizontal gene transfer; (iii) antibiotic resistance, and (iv) bacterial diseases of wild and reared aquatic organisms (including crustaceans, corals, fish, and molluscs).
