organisation profile

The Laboratory for Applied Geology and Hydrogeology (LAGH) of Ghent University has over 35 years of experience with hydrogeology and hydrochemistry of Belgian aquifers, comprising field investigations, data collection, interpretation and modelling. The LAGH has been involved in numerous applied research projects requested by the government and third parties. It has a long-lasting experience in studies of the salt/fresh-water distribution in coastal aquifers in Belgium and in the Mediterranean region. Data collection, both in the field and by laboratory tests, receives a strong emphasis in the research performed at the LAGH. For the field investigations, geophysical surface prospection equipment, drilling rigs and piezometer installation equipment, well logging tools, GPS, hydraulic head measuring tools, pumping and well test infrastructure, groundwater sampling equipment and mobile laboratory are available within the LAGH. The laboratory facilities include anorganic and organic analytical labs, workshop for construction of laboratory experimental set-ups and prototypes, infrastructure for experimental experimentation. The strong data collection support of the research unit is fully exploited in the interpretation phase, in which conceptual models are developed, and existing or in-house written mathematical models are applied, to groundwater flow, transport and reaction problems as well as dedicated hydrogeochemical problems. Research topics dealt with in the LAGH include aquifer management of porous and fractured aquifers, the baseline groundwater quality of regional aquifer systems, including isotopes in groundwater, the application of geophysical methods in hydrogeology, groundwater salinization, groundwater pollution and remediation.
