Aims of the Programs : In addition to carrying out research related to the environment and living things in the tropical biosphere, the center aims to provide a hub for joint use for researchers throughout the country who are involved in research in this field. Activities : (1) Nishihara Lab : The lab is involved in the elucidation of the systematic evolution and diversification of amphibia, reptiles, invertebrates, and disease causing microorganisms in tropical and sub-tropical environments. More substantial experiments in environmental biology and broader research have been made possible with the move of the Nishihara Lab. The laboratory move provided experimental labs for handling disease-causing microorganisms and artificial climate-control equipment. (2) Sesoko Station : At the station, the main research carried out involves living things in and the environment of the tropical and sub-tropical marine biosphere. The facility is widely used by researchers from both Japan and abroad. Throughout the year, a number of experiments and training courses are held based on the curriculum of the faculties within the University of the Ryukyus. A public summer training course aimed at students studying biology at national universities throughout the country is also held. (3) Iriomote Station : The station is mainly used to carry out research on marine and freshwater biology along the coast and on plants in the tropical and sub-tropical region. In addition to use by staff and students of the university, the facility is used by a number a visiting researchers, including international cooperation groups and students from the Kyushu and Shikoku regions, for comprehensive tropical agriculture training under a credit transfer system.
