organisation profile
The Institute of Marine Research belongs to the Department of the National Board of Fisheries. It is located in the town of Lysekil on the Swedish west coast, about 120 km north of Gothenburg. Since 1991, there has been a branch of the institute in Karlskrona, the Baltic Sea Research Station. The responsibilities of the institute can be summarized in the following way: The Institute of Marine Research shall assist the authorities and ministries concerned by:
- making scientific estimations and prognoses of the development of fish and shellfish stocks in Swedish marine waters
- giving advice on sensible exploitation of fish and shellfish stocks in Swedish marine waters
- making studies of the environmental effects of fishing as well as the effects on the environment on fish stocks and fishing.
A considerable part of the investigations at sea is carried out on board the two research vessels that are at the disposal of the institute, R/V Argos and R/V Ancylus, but research is also performed on board commercial fishing vessels, and there is an extensive sampling at landing sites. Swedish fish resources are exploited and administrated in cooperation with other countries. The most important authority is the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), whose advisory committee (ACFM) provide the biological advice on the basis of which the maximum catches of different stocks are decided each year. Scientists at the Institute are members of several of the working groups within the ICES, and these groups gather and present the data upon which the ACFM base its advice.
