The Center for Environmental Law is the research unit that coordinates the research work of the environmental law teaching staff of the Law Faculty. The Center depends since March the 1st 2001 from the Public Law en Tax Department and works in close collaboration with the Civil Law Department, to with the Center belonged before, and the International Public Law Department.
Own initiative scientific research takes the form of Ph.D.-research, books and contributions to legal journals, collective works and proceedings of conferences by staff-members and former staff members. We can refer to the theses of H. Bocken (De aansprakelijkheid als sanctie voor de verstoring van het leefmilieu- Liability as a sanction for disturbing the environment - 1979), L. Lavrysen (De ontwikkeling van het Europese, Belgische en Vlaamse Milieurecht in een wijzigende institutionele context - The development of European, Belgian and Flemish environmental law in a changing institutional context 1997) and G. Van Hoorick (Juridische aspecten van het natuurbehoud en de landschapszorg - Legal aspects of nature and country side protection - 1999) and the ongoing Ph.D.-research of S. Deloddere (Vergoeding van milieuschade- Compensation of ecological damage) en C. Billiet (Bestuurlijke handhaving milieuhygiënerecht- Administrative enforcement of environmental law).
