organisation profile

The Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) was founded in 1920 as a memorial to Captain Scott and was the world's first bi-polar research institute. Since 1957 SPRI has been a part of the University of Cambridge and is a Department in the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Geography. It is a research, teaching, and information centre carrying out research in the fields of sea ice, glaciology, remote sensing, native peoples, tourism and polar history. The secretariats of the SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research) and the IGS (International Glaciological Society) are located at SPRI. An annual report, the 'SPRI Review', discusses recent activity in the Institute, and the Institute publishes a quarterly journal 'Polar Record' (Cambridge University Press).

The library contains the world's largest collection devoted to the Arctic and Antarctic. It also houses World Data Centre 'C' for Glaciology with its extensive holdings related to snow and ice. An inhouse bibliography database, SPRILIB, is maintained and a range of publications produced including 'Polar and Glaciological Abstracts' and 'Glaciological Citations'. Since 1970 the Sea Ice and Polar Oceanography Group in the Institute has been carrying out a comprehensive sea ice research programme, including field observations, laboratory experiments, theoretical studies, and numerical modelling. So far more than 30 field expeditions have been carried out. The research focuses on understanding the nature of air-sea-ice interaction processes that occur in the polar oceans and assessing their role in climate. Historically, funding for this work has come from the U.S. Office of Naval Research, the U.K. Natural Environment Research Council, the U.K. Defence Research Agency and the European Community.
