organisation profile

The Institute of Accelerating Systems and Applications (IASA) was founded in 1994 in order to promote research and postgraduate studies in the Greek University system. It is affiliated with six university departments: Medicine, Physics and Informatics of the University of Athens and Electrical & Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering and General Science of the National Technical University of Athens. The University of Athens and the National Technical University of Athens which equally partake in IASA are the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning in Greece. IASA is charged with pursuing research and promoting graduate studies in areas where accelerators, and accelerator related technologies play a major role. Its cross disciplinary character and its superb infrastructure in enabling technologies have proven to provide particularly attractive and fertile ground a number of technology driven scientific fronts. IASA is an autonomous legal entity governed by a Board of Directors elected by the governing bodies of the two Universities and it is managed by a directorate appointed by the Senates of the two Universities. Its developmental program and its operating funds are directly provided by the Ministry of Education which exercises direct financial oversight over the Institute. IASA is the largest research institute operating under the auspices of the Ministry of Education (Greece). Its research program is supported through competitive research grants primarily from the Ministry of Development and the European Union. IASA is currently engaged in Research projects in the following areas: • Accelerator Science & Engineering • Nuclear, hadronic and particle physics • Nuclear medicine and imaging • High Energy Astrophysical Plasmas • Automated Control • Scientific Computing • Atmospheric Research • Microwave Engineering • Energy production and conservation • Telecommunications • Archaeometry and preservation of cultural heritage artifacts The Institute is affiliated, through a number of agreements, with a number of International Research Centers and Universities such as the University of Illinois and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US, DESY, CERN, Clermont-Ferrar (France), Lomonosov University, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Russia), YERPHI and CANDLE (Armenia) and the University of Sao Paolo (Brazil). The first major facility of IASA, now under construction, is a 246 MeV two-stage CW Cascade RaceTrack Microtron (RTM). The planned experimental programs and facilities for the IASA Microtron include nuclear and particle physics, nuclear medicine, archeometry and material science. Most of the current accelerator activity is towards the construction of the RTM injector, a project named as the Injector Maquette Project.
