The North Sea Directorate is part of Rijkswaterstaat. RWS Noordzee strives for a living sea, optimal navigation ways and safety for shipping. RWS Noordzee is responsible for integral management of the water, seabed, and shipping lanes in the Dutch part of the North Sea.
The hydrographical division is responsible for routine monitoring of shipping lanes in the Dutch part of the North Sea and, in relation to marine incidents, surveying of wrecks and lost cargo. Two special survey vessels, ARCA and ZIRFAEA, are equipped with sophisticated sensors and oil spill equipment.
RWS Noordzee has expertise in the field of dredging and sand & gravel extraction. Moreover, it has a management task as representative of the minister for the North Sea area. It takes care of information exchange and tuning with all user functions of the sea.RWS Noordzee has a coordinating role in the IDON (Interdepartmental Meeting platform for the North Sea) which includes many Dutch ministries.
